MUNCIE -- Despite smashing success on the baseball field, Ian Nielsen found himself in a constant battle of emotions during his two years as a student at Ball State.
"I'm a very strong Christian, and I came to Ball State more focused on baseball than I was on what I felt about my spiritual life," he said. "I found Ball State to be very challenging for my faith. I kind of knew that was going to challenge me, and that was fine.
"Throughout my freshman year, I felt a tug in my heart to look to a Christian college. I actually went to coach (Greg) Beals and asked about a transfer to Bethel College near my hometown (of LaPorte, Ind.)."

Former Campbellsville University pitching coach Scott Hortness was named the head coach of the Dakota State University baseball program Wednesday. Hortness, 45, spent the last nineseasons as the top assistant and pitching coach for the Tigers.
"I'm very happy for him, because he has made inquiries the past several years, and has made it no secret he wanted to become a head coach one day. He's fulfilled part of his life dream," CU head coach Beauford Sanders said.
Hortness will begin work immediately in Madison, S.D. He inherits a Trojans' program that was 24-20 in 2010 and finished third in the Dakota Athletic Conference. He replaces Dean Berry, who was 68-58 in three years with DSU and was hired in June as the head coach at Northern State University.

Mike Evans has resigned after 22 seasons as Bellevue University's baseball coach, school officials announced Monday.
The Bruins plan to start the search for a new coach immediately.
The successful program was rocked just before the postseason this spring when it had to forfeit most of its wins because of using an ineligible player.
Athletic Director Ed Lehotak said he could not say if that led to Evans' decision.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that Cumberland University (Tenn.) head coach Woody Hunt has been named the 2010 Rawlings-NAIA National Baseball Coach of the Year. This honor is Hunt's second in his career as he garnered the 2006 hardware. Hunt and his Bulldogs recently won the 2010 Avista-NAIA World Series title after going 58-9 on the year.
The award will be presented to Hunt at the 2011 Rawlings-NAIA Awards Luncheon in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 7. The luncheon is part of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Convention which runs from Jan. 6-9 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.
"This is a very prestigious honor, but it's really a team accomplishment," said Hunt. "Everything we get as coaches reflects on our team. We were such a singular unit as a team this season and I'm more proud of our team than any individual accomplishments."
